Wet, Wild & Free.

Marmaduke was enjoying a quick cool off jog in the water on our walk through the wetlands today.

Cookie Heaven

I gave up sweets for lent.
This is how we celebrate the fact that it has ended...
Yes, this is real.
And yes, this will induce a sugar coma. Especially if you've been "on the lent" for the last 46 days.

The Gym Crowd.

These are the people I spend most weekday mornings with. The Goals Gym am regulars. Quite the cast of characters. Bobby, pictured center with sunglasses, will be celebrating his birthday tomorrow. We all got together off the gym clock to celebrate all day today.

One With Art

Finger paint makes really great lipstick.
After hanging out with 4 18-month-olds for 2 hours, I'm ready for bed.

Expanding My Skill Set

Today at work I made green play-dough and flowers out of cupcake liners. I am definitely adding these to my resume under the "hard skills" section.

A Celebration

Folk Festival ended in style today with a brilliantly sun-shining day. This week, Juneau was the epitome of community. People coming together to sing, dance, perform, listen, hula hoop, eat, drink, entertain, and celebrate art, culture and fellowship at it's finest.

Glacial Chillin'

Literally & Figuratively.
The majority of my day today was spent hiking out to the Herbert Glacier with a great friend. We were just going on our merry way and before we know it we'd liked for 5 hours and 10 miles. Whoops.
We stopped here to lounge on the rocks and catch some rays. It was a bit cold and we were wondering why, and then we realized we were sitting in front of a giant ice cube.
Off to another night of Folk Fest!

Alaska Folk Festival

Monday night kicked off the 37th Alaska Folk Festival in Juneau. It's a whole week of free live music, dances and workshops. Each performer gets 15 minutes to do there thing on stage and all are welcome as long as you sign up in advance. Each night is extremely well attended and the Juneau community, as well as visitors, are out in full Alaskan force!

Waking Up Right

Last week kicked of Tuesday/Thursday morning hike season 2011 with one of my great friends and co-workers. This morning's hike ended down the beach and was wet, overcast, calm, quiet and a perfect way to start the day.

Professional Development

You know you're in the right field when a day of professional development consists of sock wars, jumping on bubble wrap, dancing with plastic egg shakers to songs about chickens and singing about vegetables. I went to a day-long training today on "Wellness in Childcare" that consisted of experiential learning about how to incorporate proper nutrition and lots of fun physical activity into the lives of little ones.

A Confused Sky

After a bluster of heavy snow this morning let up, the blue skies and the giant clouds and fog had a bit of a face off. I'm not sure who won, but it sure was fun to watch! Their debacle resulted in a rainbow that can be spotted under the bridge.

Congrats, Grads!

There are 167 children in Juneau who are graduating from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library this year and going to Kindergarten in the fall. Through this wonderful program they received 1 age appropriate book in the mail each month from the ages of 0-5.

We had a graduation celebration last night filled with music, books, graduation photos, diplomas and chocolate cake. Good times.

We Mean Business.

Our monthly staff meeting was today, which means that it was time for our monthly themed dress-up day. Can you guess this month's theme?
Corporate wear! It may be a bit easier if you saw this crowd on a normal day. The field of early childhood doesn't really call for this kind of dapper attire. We spend a lot of time with glue sticks. I think this is the first time that this office has seen high heels, suit coats and even a handful of bump-its! And of course, our very own Director of Canines, was looking SO fly today in his new tie.

Rockstars.

We had a sing-along stories family night tonight to prepare Juneau's littlest ones for the Alaska Folk Festival that starts next week! After toilet paper roll kazoos and some good snacks, these guys were ready to rock!

A Juneau Roadtrip

The city of Juneau can only be reached by ferry or airplane. That being said, a "Juneau Roadtrip" seems like a bit of an oxymoron. Have no fear, it can be done! I am "car sitting" this week and after work my friend and I decided to go on an adventure. There is one main road in Juneau, and it is referred to as "the road." So our epic adventure was to drive to the end of it. We stopped frequently along the way whenever the spirit moved us and I took about 200 pictures. Yikes. Here are some highlights...
We made it! Where the road ends. Clearly marked, Thanks Juneau

Puppy Love

This is Ella, the awesome dog that we got to hang out with this weekend. Her walks on the beach turned into a bit of sand bath.

Only In Juneau

Today, I saw the Governor at the grocery store, bald eagles in an equal abundance to pigeons in New York City, a man doing tai chi in an abandoned pavilion and the view below for an entire dog walk. I love this place.

Happy Chicken Day!

Today was the long awaited "chicken day" in my office. My wonderful supervisor, Joy, is a chicken enthusiast and today is her birthday. All 9 of us made a chicken that resembled ourself in some way and surprised her this morning with a chicken filled office. We hung our personal chickens, decorated the walls with chicken pictures, filled easter eggs with chicken jokes, had the chicken dance playing on repeat, and more. We sure know how to party at AEYC.
